GDJYB X WHIZZ — Hey Darling Darling Fill My Empty Soul
Brilliant collaboration of two music bands.
There are two Hong Kong based indie music bands: GDJYB and WHIZZ. Both are all-female and very experimental.
GDJYB (雞蛋蒸肉餅) (Bandcamp / YouTube / Instagram / Facebook) was founded 2012. They are famous for their distinctive “math-folk” sound — a fusion of math rock’s intricate rhythms with the storytelling essence of folk music. Their lyrics, often penned in “Honglish” (a blend of Cantonese and English), delve into themes ranging from personal introspection to pressing social issues.
2025 they published a wonderful song “Hey Darling Darling” with an enigmatic music video:
WHIZZ (Instagram / Facebook / YouTube) was formed in March 2019. The group comprises vocalist Wang Yushan, guitarist Moo, bassist Bowie, and drummer Jess. They describe their musical style as “Groovy Pop,” blending upbeat rhythms with introspective lyrics. Their philosophy centers on the idea that “time whizzes past,” encouraging listeners to live in the moment and enjoy life.
2025 they published a wonderful song “Fill My Empty Soul” with an enigmatic music video:
Both videos are about endless wondering and wandering, about Escheresque ontology, and about a hope to break through, but in a soft, lyrical way.
In both videos, we see liminal spaces of staircases and repeating characters, as if they are caught in an endless loop — with the musicians trying to find the exit. In the end, they discover the remnants of their mutual realities — the songs themselves. By reaching out to each other, they finally find a way out.
Both videos are directed by Bong Cheung and can be viewed synchronously, which is truly a mesmerizing experience.
Infinite Jest!
