Good Bye, RunwayML
Not a fairy tale. Based on real events.
A long time ago… Well, time is relative, especially when it comes to the rapid development of AI. We are writing the year 2019—actually, “only” five years ago, before the COVID era. But in terms of AI, 2019 is already the early Middle Ages.
It was a magical time. Breathtaking deep learning models were shooting out of nowhere. GPT-2 was announced. And then there was this mysterious website whose goal sent me into a state of pure joy: accessible open-source models without the need for a heavy GPU or deep Python knowledge. The creators of those pre-Prompt days often came from the traditional arts and didn’t have a computer science background.
RunwayML. A Machine Learning Tools Suite.
But: Waitlist! Long before GPT-3 and DALL-E, there were waitlists for beta access, and if you are a real experimenter, you are obliged to take all available beta accesses.
And then… I’ve got a nice DM from RunwayML in my box.
It was the beginning of a long creative journey.
