My contribution to Aikphrasis by Holly Grimm
A new Art Project is emerging. Holly Grimm, a multimedia artist started her “Aikphrasis”. This project emphasizes semantic bridges between an artwork and its description. I see here parallels with Magritte’s discourse about an object and its depiction — which became in times of Data Science and Machine Learning a new level of significance.
As Holly explains:
The neologism Aikphrasis comes from Ekphrasis, a vivid description of a work of art. The results of this project will constitute a reverse ekphrasis — artwork generated from a text.
The process of artwork-making is as follows: using GPT-3 Holly generates a description of an artwork — and other artists re-build their versions of the still-non-existing art. With every medium possible.
