Pareidolia: Faces in Grains of Sand
Poetic AI-driven Art Project by Driessens & Verstappen
Artificial Intelligence and Pareidolia have a beautiful liaison, as we’ve already seen. It recognizes patterns of data it’s trained on — with surprising effects. At the same time, Pareidolia relates humans to machines — because our evolutionary trained brain and machines can recognize things in similar ways.
Especially faces, as you’ve seen in my video series parAIdolia.
The artist couple Driessens & Verstappen took a very poetic step towards AI-driven pattern recognition. They’ve let scan with a microscope countless grains of sand. As a next step, a pattern recognition AI-model tried to find faces on each of these grain.
Search, and you will find. AI discovers a rich diversity on faces in the sand. How poetic: artificial intelligence is searching in non-human substances human Gestalt. This is like the opposite anthropomorphism of Artificial Intelligence we humans tend to maintain.
