Today, we are launching a new social-led education campaign to help raise awareness of how consumers are empowered to make decisions to stay protected when using Facebook.

As part of Meta’s efforts to raise awareness around privacy during Privacy Awareness Week 2024, the campaign will run for a week and target Facebook users in Australia.

“At Meta, we know privacy is important to our users. We take a privacy-first approach in everything we do and offer a range of easy-to-use tools for people to understand and manage their privacy within the Facebook Privacy Centre. During Privacy Awareness Week, we want to remind people how they can keep safe online by reminding them they are in control of what they want to share and see.” — Mia Garlick, Regional Director of Policy for Australia, Japan, Korea, New Zealand & Pacific Islands at Meta.

The campaign will spotlight important tools available to users, such as:

  • Privacy Checkup reminder: Our Privacy Checkup provides a step-by-step feature that guides people through important privacy settings to help them choose the right level of protection, all in one place. This includes turning on two-factor authentication to strengthen their account security, use tools to limit what certain people can see and transparency around how their information is used.
  • Putting young people in control: We want teens to have safe, age-appropriate experiences on our apps. To help make sure teens are regularly checking their safety and privacy settings we’re reminding them of the Privacy Checkup where they can update their settings to avoid bullying and harassment, or see ads and content that are not suitable for them. Young people have access to these tools to help ensure Facebook is safe for them to connect, discover and explore.
  • Transparency around why consumers see certain ads or content: We’ve created more transparency around why people see certain ads or content on Facebook and Instagram. In Meta’s Privacy Centre, users have the option to review their ad preferences, options to block unwanted content and implement controls that influence what they see on their feed.
Meta’s privacy awareness campaign

“This new campaign will help educate consumers of the privacy tools and information they have access to in the Privacy Centre and allow them to control and decide what they want to share online. We know the importance of providing people with transparency and control over their data, and we will continue to develop new and improved privacy tools and controls to meet those expectations.” — Mia Garlick, Regional Director of Policy for Australia, Japan, Korea, New Zealand & Pacific Islands at Meta.

Meta’s Privacy Centre is a resource to help users learn how to best manage and control their privacy when using Facebook, as well as Meta’s other apps including Instagram, Messenger and WhatsApp. It supports people in making choices that are right for them and tools like our Privacy Checkup make it easy for people to take control of their privacy
