An Inventor in the Making

A Maker messes around with materials in the Garage at MetaMedia.

Think about any famous inventor you’ve ever heard of: Thomas Edison, Benjamin Franklin, Alexander Graham Bell. How did each of them get their start? By tinkering around with different materials and machinery. After all, Bell didn’t just conjure the telephone out of thin air overnight! These important inventors needed time to practice and learn to be more creative and innovative.

And that’s exactly what Makers get the chance to do at MetaMedia.

A Maker’s own invention, made out of a motor, a battery, tinfoil, wire and electrical tape.

Today, one Maker decided to work with the materials in MetaMedia’s Garage while FaceTiming with his mom using one of the space’s many laptops, asking her questions and showing her what he was working on. As he was tinkering, his mom was shocked by his excitement and ability to articulate his project.

Experimenting with several different colored wires, batteries, tinfoil, and more, the Maker created a contraption that involved a spinning motor (on which he later burnt his finger, but at least it was fun while it lasted).

While exploring what the Garage had to offer, this inventor in the making learned about the conduction of electricity and got the chance to communicate and share his experience with a loved one, all at the same time.

He was the perfect example of the “messing around” aspect of MetaMedia’s HOMAGO theory — maybe soon he’ll start to really geek out.

The Maker searches for a battery in one of the many stocked drawers in the Garage.
