Mateo shows off his code for his new website, Quicknote.

Ladies and gentlemen, we have a winner! Mateo, one of two victors of MetaMedia’s Spring Break 2k16 Virtual Talent Contest, won a pair of free Beats headphones because he coded MetaMedia’s website to make it tablet-friendly…keep in mind he’s only in middle school.

As if that wasn’t impressive enough, he’s back at it again in a big way.

He’s working on creating a new website, called Quicknote, which he coded to work on both desktops and mobile devices.

Mateo, who learned how to code with the help of a MetaMedia staff member, explained to me that HTML creates the content of the website and CSS manipulates the style of it — for instance, the font and the layout.

Although he auto-generated a lot of the code, he then changed and edited it to make his website look exactly the way he imagined it.

The desktop version of Mateo’s website.

The interactive site includes features such as a search bar to find other users’ notes that you can then use to study. According to Mateo, he wanted to make this website because he “thought it would be good for everyone at school.”

He’s even working on branding his website, creating a logo using logomakr.com and coming up with slogans for Quicknote, naming it “the ultimate note-taking and school website” and describing it as “Better Note-taking with a twist.”

Mateo tries a multitude of tactics to attract readers to Quicknote.com.

Talk about putting STEAM education into practice — Mateo saw a problem and used his knowledge of coding to find a solution and help other middle schoolers at the same time.

Knowing what he’s already accomplished, I can’t wait to see Mateo.com!
