The food coloring dissolves in the water, making for an amazing photograph.

Makers flocked to the Water and Food Coloring Photography station today to create beautiful, colorful images at the drop of a hat — or, a drop of food coloring.

The Makers were in awe of the cool photos.

The station’s intricate set-up featured a large sheet of white paper backlit by a bright light, a clear plastic cube filled with water, a variety of colors of food coloring, and a camera set up on a tripod at just the right angle.

The Makers could choose any combination of colors to be the star of their photographs, with some of the most popular colors being red, green and blue. Here’s a tip that the middle schoolers learned quickly: simple is better. Lots of colors just turned the water brown!

One Maker takes photos of the food coloring.

With the camera set to a fast shutter speed, the Makers added in the food coloring, then quickly took a burst of photos as the color dispersed into the water, each frame capturing a different and unique image.

Some Makers even used compressed air to make bubbles in the water as they clicked the camera’s shutter, producing even cooler photographs (and making a bit of a mess in the process).

This station was a great way for the Makers to experiment with photography and exercise their creativity.
