Ready Layer One
I really wasn’t looking for a job. I had just left my gig at Unity to take a breath, take a look around, and take my sweet time finding the next way stop on a path to building the open Metaverse.
But apparently the Metaverse has other plans for me.
The evolutionary pressure created by a potential Meta-Babel might be forcing it to rewrite its code on the fly. Or perhaps we’ve all been following some arcane Metaversy logic this whole time, drawn to a final cause, an attractor that brings us to this moment. Either way, today marks a new, stranger-than-fiction chapter in my personal story. I have just signed on as Chief Strategy officer at Lamina1, a new layer 1 blockchain and set of decentralized services to power the open Metaverse, founded by crypto pioneer Peter Vessenes and author Neal Stephenson.
Yes, that Neal Stephenson.
Fanboying aside, Neal’s incisive mind and expansive vision combined with Peter’s encyclopedic technical and business knowledge in web3 can’t be beat. Add advisor Rony Abovitz’s wild creativity and burning desire to make the world a better place with technology and you have something really special. I am humbled and as you can imagine, quite over the moon to be keeping company with this team. I’ve been getting to know them over the last few months and I am convinced that we have the stuff to make the open Metaverse vision a reality in a way that nobody else can.
A fully immersive Metaverse needs many things to succeed, including and especially a new layer 1 chain built for that purpose — and one that is friendly to the planet. Our team is aligned on what is important in this next phase in the evolution of the Internet, and we are going to build systems that enable a fun, free and open Metaverse, accessible to all, where platforms get their due and creators get paid their fare share.
