On May 27, 2018, members of the EOS.IO community found themselves the target of a phishing campaign.

Open source blockchain software publisher Block.one warns users that an email containing “upcoming June 1st update!” in the subject line is not an official communication from the company. According to a statement from Block.one, a number of the phishing emails originated from the Block.one Zendesk Support System, lending legitimacy to the fraudulent message. Recipients of the malicious email were linked to a website purporting to offer EOS Token registration prior to the final distribution of EOS Tokens.

The scammer’s email redirects users to a known phishing site classified by MetaCert Protocol as malicious on May 26, 2018 at 6:22 pm (PST), eoslaunch.io (WARNING — do not visit this site). Because of this, users who protected themselves by installing the Cryptonite browser add-on, powered by the MetaCert Protocol, were warned if they clicked on the link.

Details on the nature of how Block.one discovered the issue remain murky, although the company did say that it has shut down Zendesk pursuant to an investigation into the matter. Block.one also said that it sent out warning emails to users who received the phishing email. In its statement, the company revealed that certain Block.one systems may have been accessed by the malicious sender, suggesting that the contents of emails sent too and from Block.one and its affiliates could have been viewed, including any personal information contained therein.

I’ve reached out to Zendesk and Block.one for clarity on the situation and look forward to a response.

This incident is another reminder that phishing attacks can come from anywhere. MetaCert recommends users take precautions to protect themselves against malicious actors by installing the Cryponite extension for Chrome, Firefox, and Opera browsers.
