A veteran among venture capital firms with a combined worth of $3.3 trillion, Sequoia Capital, warned all of its limited partners regarding a phishing email targeting one of the company’s investors. This is a reasonable response from Sequoia, and there hasn’t been any breach in their security.

In the past, Sequoia shrewdly invested in booming tech companies such as Apple, Cisco, and Google, and more recently has seen success with WhatsApp, Dropbox, as well as Github. Now the firm has found itself in the crosshairs of a cybercriminal trying to use industry lingo and knowledge of the company’s communication style.

According to a report, the email sent by bad actors requested a “capital call be sent to a bank account in Mexico.” The perpetrator of the scam knew how to craft a believable message based on Sequoia’s cautionary email, which warns, “This spoofed email is very convincing, as it mimics a legitimate Sequoia capital call notice in both form as well as substantive language and presentation.” A noteworthy discrepancy, the scammer sent the email from a domain where the ‘q’ in Sequoia was replaced with a ‘g’ in an effort to fly under the radar: segouiacap.com ←- this is classified by MetaCert as “Phishing”.

With phishing emails on the rise, MetaCert has worked out a simple, elegant, yet very powerful solution to warn users when to beware of dangerous and suspicious links in emails. The beta version currently supports Apple Mail and Thunderbird, and we’re developing versions for Samsung Email, Gmail and Outlook too. You can sign up to our beta program here.
