A lot of people on Twitter felt the effects of a recent purge on the platform, aimed at reducing the number of bots following various social media influencers. However, many of those in the sphere of “crypto-Twitter” might have noticed that while the amount of followers they have might have taken a dip, the onslaught of scams utilizing faux accounts has not diminished in the slightest.

This may be attributable to the fact that scammers are constantly spinning up new accounts from which to launch their phishing attacks. While the cryptocurrency ecosystem’s rollercoaster like volatility has attracted a lot of spectators thanks to garnering a bit of mainstream media momentum late in 2017, oncoming waves of investors with relatively little knowledge of the field are finding themselves preyed upon by nefarious actors.

Take this Tweet for example:

This is not the real Binance account.

With the prices of Ethereum and Bitcoin showing a bullish momentum, conditions in the market are certainly favorable for phishers waiting for newcomers to fall into their traps, namely sites that gather private keys to access and empty out cryptocurrency wallets. Most often, wallet services that provide access to assets stored on the blockchain are impersonated by phishing sites. This is why it’s imperative that everyone deciding to get into cryptocurrency take time to protect themselves from fraud.

MetaCert has your back. We built an add-on called Cryptonite for Chrome, Firefox, and Opera browsers. Cryptonite lets you know when you’re looking at a verified resource for cryptocurrency when the black shield in your browser window turns green. Cryptonite also shows the green shield verification next to validated cryptocurrency related Twitter accounts, so if any scam-bots that didn’t get caught in the last platform purge persist, you’ll avoid the trap.

With all the scams going on in the ecosystem, make sure that you take measures to protect your assets. Remember, never give your private key to anyone, if a giveaway sounds too good to be true, it probably is, and to download Cryptonite today!

The MetaCert Protocol is a trust and reputation threat intelligence system for verifying web resources. It addresses a number of attack vectors, encompassing solutions for anti-phishing, child safety, brand protection, crypto-address verification, and news credibility. Find out more about the MetaCert Protocol, ask questions, and leave suggestions on both our White Paper and Technical Paper. You can also join our Telegram community to stay up to date on our blockchain project. Remember to install Cryptonite to protect yourself from phishing scams before it’s too late.
