In this post, we plan to address key questions regarding Metacoin. (You can check our FAQ list here) But before we talk about Metacoin, it is essential to understand Hyperledger which is the base of the Metacoin Project.
So What Exactly is Hyperledger?
To be exact, Hyperledger itself is not a blockchain or a cryptocurrency, it is rather a project. The Hyperledger website describes as the following :
Hyperledger or the Hyperledger Project is an open source collaborative effort created to advance cross-industry blockchain technologies. It is a global collaboration, hosted by the Linux Foundation, including leaders in finance, banking, Internet of Things, supply chains, manufacturing, and Technology.
The project was found by the Linux Foundation in December 2015 and now it is joined by more than 100 members with names like IBM, Intel, Samsung, J.P. Morgan and also a number of blockchain startups. All of these companies have joined the project aiming to “create an enterprise-grade, open source distributed ledger framework and code base” and create, promote and maintain an open infrastructure.
Hyperledger incubates and promotes various projects which range from libraries to framework and business blockchain technologies. Among them, the most interesting project is Hyperledger Fabric, which is led by IBM and the base of Metacoin.
Hyperledger Fabric is a blockchain framework implementation intended as a foundation for developing applications or solutions with a modular architecture, therefore allowing components, such as consensus and membership services, to be ‘plug-and-play’. Hyperledger Fabric can also deploy ‘smart contracts’ called Chaincode which is a key feature of the framework.
Metacoin is based on this Hyperledger Fabric and the term Hyperledger used across our documents all refers to Hyperledger Fabric.
