John Carmack A Gaming Genius, Slams The Door In Frustration Over Facebook’s Strategy On The Metaverse
Who is John Carmack? And why did he really leave Meta? Are his words bearers of truth and should he be given credit or not? I will try to respond to all this to understand the crisis that is looming over Facebook. They have wanted to divert a large part of their commitment to the construction of virtual reality.
For Mark Zuckerberg, it should have been a new source of income, a new lung to breathe oxygen after the stock market crashed and the beginning of a decline in his social networks.
But it didn’t go as planned. John Carmack decided to leave the project, stating that there is a”significant gap” in strategic thinking between him and Zuckerberg.
In his words, Carmack brought to light a very real problem: Facebook was neglecting the quality of virtual reality in favor of a growing number of users who were not necessarily interested in these developments.
Carmack left VR with the goal of pursuing more liberating and flexible projects, as explained in his final statement: “I want to focus my energies towards exploring the future of human and technological interaction in a more responsible and less employed by a single company”.
WHO IS JOHN CARMACK
Basically in a press release, he explained that: he felt greatly dissatisfied by the poor operational efficiency of Meta’s VR business.
He never felt adequately able to influence it in the right direction.
But when did Carmack arrive at Facebook?
- Carmack, 52, joined virtual reality developer Oculus in 2013, before its acquisition by Meta.It was still known as Facebook, in 2014.
- After starting at Oculus as chief technology officer, he most recently served as an executive consultant for virtual reality at Meta, where he served as an outspoken internal critic.
- Zuckerberg renamed the company he founded Meta to signal his commitment to developing a so-called metaverse of virtual 3D experiences.
HERE’S WHAT HE SAID
“I have a top-level voice here, so it looks like I should be able to move things around,” Carmack said in the press release.
“But I’ve never been able to kill stupid things before they do damage, or set a direction and have a team actually stick to it.”
He has been involved in the production of classic first-person shooter games Quake and Doom.
He then helped introduce 3D graphics to PC video games.
Today, however, he believes that “everything needed for spectacular success is right there, but it’s not put together effectively” in the company. There is, a smaller gap between him and Mark, which according to him should be filled with a greater listening of his ideas.
THE FACEBOOK METAVERSE (META) PROJECT
Mark Zuckerberg is investing billions to create his metaverse.
He wants it to be something completely new and different from existing social networks: a virtual interaction space where people can come together to do things like create shared content, play video games or just chat.
The fact is that very few users are currently registering. The truth is the virtual world is little frequented.
We know very well where there is little attendance or few views there is little advertising (therefore sponsors who pay) and little trade (therefore little money going around.)
The result was that the takings were lower than expected.
The second-order result was a further stock market crash for Meta and the firing of a lot of its employees who were developing the metaverse.
Something here is not working.
It should also worth mentioning that all metaverses recorded lower interactions than expected.
While the investments of other 3D worlds have been lower (because they are less mega galactic and megalomaniacal like that of Facebook) and consequently the losses have also been lower.
Mark, on the other hand, has made a real hole in the water at the moment.
In the beginning, he launched it as an excellent place to have virtual meetings, conferences, and more in the professional field.
But obviously, they are not enough to do all these services, especially if an effective and real human interaction point is missing.
Here a huge problem arises: how to make the Facebook metaverse more engaging and interesting? How to build a metaverse of millions of users capable of generating profit?
Just as its social networks are doing. Yet, we do not yet know how long they will be able to generate dizzying earnings.
And how to ensure that it is still socially responsible and ecologically sustainable?
METAVERSE: OPPORTUNITY OR JUST A SOAP BUBBLE?
To answer this question, they first need to figure out how to create this parallel world in a sustainable way. Because otherwise, the metaverse could be just another financial bubble about to burst.
We just have to wait to see how this story will end; however, we know that the next generation will undoubtedly benefit from the opportunities that will come from the Facebook metaverse and others, such as Roblox, The Sandbox, Decentraland, and others.
But what are the potential opportunities of the Metaverse?
For example, people can come together virtually to host a conference of thousands of guests, attending from any corner of the world.
We can also predict that artists and content creators will be able to use this platform to create new digital products for the global market.
Then there is the opportunity to develop new forms of entertainment based on augmented and immersive reality.
The metaverse will offer its users the opportunity to shop in a virtual reality interconnected with the real world.
New economic models centered around trade and virtual exchange could also be developed that can generate large profits for the people involved.
Everything will depend on the success that entrepreneurs and tech-savvy people will have in creating an innovative, fun, and intuitive environment that can attract the masses as the web, in general, has done in the last decade Instagram, Facebook, and lately TikTik
The bottom line, a metaverse can offer great earning opportunities to anyone with the patience and skill to create it. Some estimate that it will also lead to an increase in the more of some states such as China
But at the same time, it’s important to remember that these virtual worlds aren’t foolproof; they must be carefully developed and designed in such a way as to ensure both financial and personal long-term success.
Only in this way will they be able to represent a real opportunity.
Companies and organizations that will launch into this sector will have to make sure they have the right technological tools (such as the blockchain) to build a durable and fair system.
The key is to invest in the research and development of innovative solutions that aim at the well-being of users. Only in this way can a satisfactory level of use be achieved.
This is the way to bring the metaverse to success. Along the way, Mark Zuckerberg probably missed some passages, which not even Carmack was able to get into his head.
