Growing up, our parents asked us to study hard, work hard, respect our elders, save for a rainy day, avoid bad influences, and many other things — all meant to help protect us and mold us into wise adults. As children, we often brushed our parents’ advice aside but, as we age and mature, those words become much more relevant and true.

Meet Germel Boado, also known as DJ G-Wrex. We caught up at San Pedro Market in San Jose, CA to catch up on the past, present and future. Germel has been a life-long resident of San Jose’s east side, and grew up collecting Warriors gear, holding basketball players as idols, a basketball always in hand. He would ball, and ball, and ball… until one day it occurred to him that a career in the NBA was probably not in the cards for him as he was slender, lanky, and weaker than other players. From that day on, Germel focused his free time on music. His best friend, Dominic Cueto, aka DJ Goldenchyld, taught him how to match, fade, scratch, and the basics of disc jockeying. He got pretty good at it and continued to enjoy DJ’ing as a pastime. Performing at friend’s parties, small gigs, and so forth. People loved it, he enjoyed it. He was happy, but never viewed it as a career. It wasn’t until he had his son that the world changed for Germel.

Germel grew up in the 90's and there were not many Asians in entertainment or sports. There was definitely not a single Asian player in the NBA. It’s been more than 20 years since then, and there have been not just a handful of Asian players in the NBA, but the slender, lanky, less bulked up player is making a difference (looking at you Steph Curry, GO WARRIORS!!!). Germel’s son currently also loves basketball and Germel is encouraging it. “Who knows, maybe there’s a chance…,” he says, “I want what I didn’t have for him, and I want to encourage his dreams, even if the odds are slim.

It is also his son that made Germel view DJ’ing with new perspective. He graduated to spinning at clubs, lounges, and larger, late-night events. One afternoon a couple asked Germel if he would like to DJ at their wedding. When the evening ended and the groom passed Germel an envelope with payment, he knew he had found a new calling — weddings were the answer. They paid multiples of what clubs did, and lasted a only few hours rather than a typical club schedule of 10pm — 2am, which ultimately allows him to spend more time with his son. That’s what matters, and that’s what drives Germel. Making a little more money, working a little less, and spending more time with his loved ones — that’s what motivates him.

Simple things like going out for ice cream or taking his son to see a movie in the theater are the types of activities Germel enjoys in his free time. Germel started to tune out the bad energy in his life and replaced it with good vibes. Who would have thought that parents knew best? What if we all followed our parents’ advice from the get go? Today, Germel is in a good place. He’s happy. His son is growing up fast, he has a place to call home, he has an incredible woman he’s proud to call his better half, he’s expanding his wedding DJ business, and the Warriors being in the finals after all these years as a Warriors fan… for Germel, life couldn’t be better.
