When you enter Ambar’s studio, The Color Palette, in San Mateo you’ll immediately notice that there are no distractions. There are no other clients, or any other outside influences that come between Ambar and you. You see, Ambar’s philosophy of being a hair stylist goes so much further than just hair — Ambar views her clients as friends, and her clients often view her as a confidant. She once had a client refer to herself as a ‘jellyfish.’ How you convince someone that they don’t look like a jellyfish is beyond me, but this is just one of the small miracles that Ambar performs every week.
After 16 years of practicing and building a client base from prestigious San Francisco Bay Area salons, primarily Aveda Salons, Bumble and Bumble and Karastase, Ambar has branched off on her own and set up shop with Sola Salons in San Mateo. Becoming independent has been challenging, but so much more rewarding says Ambar. Things she never had to take into consideration such as who would wash the salon towels, or re-modeling choices, or how to entertain her client’s children were things she had to address in her practice. As a result she not only needed to continue to focus on her client’s needs but her own operational necessities as a business owner now. These details really set The Color Palatte apart. Ambar has architected an environment where she is able to 100% focus on her clients and their very individual needs.
Ambar’s mission statement says it all, “My goal is to change lives, one appointment at a time.” You see, a fresh haircut and conversation can change the opinion and perception of one’s day, week, and even life. There is a small assortment of candy with a framed sign, “Hello Gorgeous” is reads. Ambar says everyone is gorgeous, her job as a stylist is to bring that out of every client.
More often than not she tells new clients that transformation doesn’t happen in one afternoon, but creates a roadmap toward a goal and through multiple visits Ambar is able to shape, transform and cultivate not just her client’s hair styles but their overall perception of who they are and most importantly a confidence boost. When her clients are thrilled it really shows in their eyes and in their smile. Everyone of my clients are gorgeous, says Ambar, they may not know it when they first sit in my chair, but they will by the moment they’re ready to get up.
