The Long Road

Larry Huan / CERC at Stanford University

Just behind the hustle and bustle of Sand Hill Road in Menlo Park is a neighborhood of intertwined streets and homes of various architectural visions. It is here where Larry Huan resides and where we caught up about the current state of his professional pursuits, life in general, and his canine companion.

I’ve known Larry for quite some time and, ever since meeting him, I’ve noticed that if there is a longer, more difficult route to complete anything — that is the path of Larry’s choice. This is not out of sheer stubbornness, but possibly a byproduct of his training at Cal Engineering or simply his incredible will. What stands out from his other qualities is his commitment and principle in doing what he does; for example, there are not many who would pursue the medical profession after graduating UC Berkeley’s Engineering program, but this is exactly what Larry did. (And in between the two, Larry even found time for a short career at IBM!)

Today, nearly a decade after earning his undergraduate degree and having completed four years of medical school and three in residency, Larry juggles three roles. Larry is a CERC (Clinical Excellence Research Center) healthcare innovation fellow at Stanford, consults for an X-prize Tricorder start-up, and keeps his medical skill set sharp by seeing patients in a nearby urgent care. His career will continue to follow the road less traveled, as he intends to further immerse himself in the digital health industry, combining his experience in technology, medicine, and health system innovation to improve value in healthcare.

Many would have given up years ago and settled for a career that provided safe and stable income, but not Larry. Ever since college Larry has fully immersed himself into each of his professional endeavors and personal interests or hobbies whether that be assembling Ikea furniture, performing maintenance on his vehicles, maintaining friendships, appreciating gin or coffee, dabbling in photography or studying medicine. Larry is the type of guy you want on your team — someone who has an unwavering expectation of nothing but excellence of oneself and someone who is actively invested in others’ best interests.

One may imagine that with all of his commitments Larry has little downtime, and while that may be partially true, he has cleverly combined two of his favorite pastimes: his rescue dog Tanq (yes, as in Tanqueray) and photography. Stumpydog Studios was something conceptualized and created by Larry and his wife while living in Portland and combines two of his loves: Tanq and photography. Stumpydog Studios does a couple of things — whenever Larry and Clara have a free moment, they take portraits of Humane Society dogs to better their odds of adoption, and provide professional photography services — all the while helping out local animal shelters. If someone needs professional head shots or event photography services or other professional photos taken, rather than charging full fees for services rendered, Stumpydog Studios asks that the client make a tax-deductible donation to a local Humane Society branch, animal shelter, or rescue dog program in the San Francisco Bay Area.

We often hear clichés like ‘life is a journey, enjoy it’, or ‘stop and smell the roses’ but they are true! While the long road is obviously not the shortest, it will likely be the most memorable. Larry is a perfect example of how to live a life where each moment is part of the reward, and where memories are created at each step of the journey.
