City of Miami Proclamation
“I, Francis Suarez, Mayor of the City of Miami, Florida, and Commissioner Sabina Covo do hereby recognize Raul Guerrero. In observance Thereof, we call upon all residents of the City of Miami and the Honorable City Commission to join me in honoring and commending Raul Guerrero.”
I would like to thank the Mayor of the City of Miami, Francis Suarez, and Commissioner Sabina Covo, District 2, for the Proclamation honoring and commending me. Specially for highlighting my work in journalism and education, two essential elements for a democratic system. I am honored and humbled.
From the Proclamation:
Whereas, Raul Guerrero served as the Editor-in-Chief for “Downtown News,” the first and only multimedia publication dedicated exclusively to Downtown Miami. Downtown News brought together a select group of citizen journalists as collaborators to report, chronicle, and analyze Downtown life. The publication also celebrated individuals and institutions that have made a positive impact on the neighborhood; and
Whereas, Raul Guerrero is the founder and Director of the Downtown Arts and Science Salon (DASS), where he has dedicated to curating a unique blend of open university and social club; and,
Whereas, his primary goal is to foster a strong sense of community in Downtown. DASS hosts a wide range of events, covering diverse topics such as local politics, urban planning, journalism, architecture, physics, artificial intelligence, and the arts; and,
Whereas, notable guests who have participated in the salons include Physicist Pete Marcowitz, Assistant Dean of the Department of Physics at Florida International University, Xavier Cortada, artist and professor of Law at University of Miami, Dr. Beatriz Gonzalez, MDC President Wolfson; Miami-Dade Commissioner Eileen Higgins; urbanists Bernard Zyscovich and Victor Dover; real estate developer Avra Jain; Miami Herald’s urban reporter Andres Viglucci, Frank Steslow, President and CEO of the Frost Science Museum.
Whereas, expanding on his journalist efforts, Raul Guerrero is now the Editor-in-Chief of Matro Metro News +; and,
Whereas, Raul Guerrero is the Author of an impressive body of work that encompasses a dozen books of fiction and nonfiction. One of his notable books is “Crónica del Corazón,” a Spanish-language mini-encyclopedia on heart health coauthored with Dr. Mauro Moscucci, the former Chairman of the School of Medicine at the University of Miami. Raul Guerrero’s dedication to promoting a healthy heart in Hispanic communities nationwide has been recognized by the American Heart Association.
Whereas, his most recent endeavor involves editing and coauthoring “DOWNTOWN MIAMI HISTORY: Chronicling 125 Years: 1896–2021.” This comprehensive publication incorporates book excerpts, essays, articles, interviews, and memoirs contributed by esteemed historians, architects, journalists, and social critics. Notable contributors include historian Dr. Paul George, architect and University of Miami professor Allan Shulman, veteran newspaperman Howard Kleinberg, and poet Campbell McGrath; and,
Whereas, Raul Guerrero is also the author of historical novels, such as INSOLENCE, which explores two thousand years of modern history through the memoir and history penned by woman who defied societal norms of her time; and
Now, Therefore, I, Francis Suarez, Mayor of the City of Miami, Florida, and Commissioner Sabina Covo do hereby recognize Raul Guerrero

Final words
Newspapering and education are by definition a collaborative effort, and I have been very fortunate to count on a great team of citizen journalists to create the first and only newspaper focused exclusively on Downtown Miami. And plan to continue fostering a sense of community, a larger community, as Editor of Metro News +. The publication Metro News + is an innovative comparative approach to urban coverage from three perspectives, three districts within vibrant and diverse cities like Chelsea, New York City, Portland Oregon and Metropolitan Miami. And plan to continue disseminating knowledge through Arts + Science Salons.
I dedicate this Proclamation to my most determined and beloved collaborator, my wife Aurea Veras!
