In partnership with Link, Metta has supported Novo Nordisk in launching their Digital Innovation Hub in the UK.

Headquartered in Denmark, Novo Nordisk is a leading global healthcare company on a mission to drive change to defeat diabetes and other serious chronic diseases. This year, Novo Nordisk has established a network of Digital Innovation Hubs in the most active and vibrant digital health ecosystems around the world to drive this change. At Metta, we’ve partnered with Link, an innovation and learning hub who engage with startups, cities and corporates to foster innovation, for the Digital Innovation Hub launch in the UK.

With our in-depth knowledge of the London startup ecosystem, and alongside our global partners in Berlin, Shanghai, and Sao Paulo, we’ve been working together with Novo Nordisk to uncover emerging healthcare trends and the most promising digital solutions across key focus areas for the pharmaceutical company. Novo Nordisk is leading the way in Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes, obesity, growth disorders, haemophilia, sickle cell disease, rare diseases, non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) and cardiovascular diseases.

Empowering patients through integrated and personalised care

Tomorrow’s healthcare system will look completely different to the one we have today, and now is the time to adopt innovative new technologies to tackle existing healthcare challenges. London has always been ripe for innovation — and created many new opportunities for consumer-facing startups especially when it comes to reimagining the patient experience. Beyond patient care, the National Health Service (NHS) published the NHS Long Term Plan in 2019 together with healthcare staff, organisations and the public shining a light on three key areas:

  1. Giving everyone the best start in life,
  2. Delivering world-class care,
  3. Helping people age well.

As part of the plan over the next 10 years, the NHS will invest in innovative technologies and increase the range of digital health tools and services they provide. This will not only give patients more control over their own health and the care they receive from the NHS, but also provide health and care staff with the technology they need to help them complete administrative tasks more quickly, resulting in creating more time to spend with patients.

The growth of the UK digital health landscape

Based on a recent report from Speedinvest, the UK is home to the largest number of digital health startups founded in Europe between 2010 and 2020. On top of this, the UK has ranked first in terms of total funding — with €3.5 billion invested in these startups. Consumer health, patient engagement, and screen and diagnostics are all part of the evolving digital health startup ecosystem and it’s promising to see more entrepreneurs take on the major challenges facing practitioners and patients in this digital shift.

At Metta, we’re looking forward to partnering with disruptive innovators and startups in digital health and sharing more about our work with Novo Nordisk in the coming months.

Stay tuned for future updates about our partnership.
