Supporting the elevation of sustainable startups in aerospace

The ATI Boeing Accelerator is a three month-long programme, intended to support innovation and the growth of startups in the UK’s aerospace ecosystem.

The accelerator was created in 2019 by the Aerospace Technology Institute, alongside sponsors Boeing and GKN Aerospace, in partnership with Rolls-Royce. Its mission is to support world-class startups who are creating sustainability-enabling technologies with the potential to bolster the growth and competitiveness of the UK aerospace industry.

The accelerator has run two cohorts, one in person in London, and another run remotely in response to the coronavirus pandemic. The accelerator programmes were designed to invest in and support startups working across energy, industry 4.0, and sustainability, from around the world.

Metta, then working in association with the Ignite accelerator, was a delivery partner for the programme. We designed and delivered the programme curriculum, ran the application and selection processes, and managed the day-to-day for all involved.

Metta also provided in-depth workshops on topics such as sales to networking, and culture to fundraising. We collaborated with partners and mentors for the programmes, developed and maintained ecosystem engagement strategies with industry stakeholders and investors, and led on community activities, content and Demo Day.

Combined, the two programmes received over 460 applications from over 40 countries globally, from companies ranging from bootstrapped founders to post-Series A stage businesses.

For the 20 startups to join the two cohorts, over 300 corporate and investor introductions were facilitated by the team. £2M was invested into the companies via Boeing HorizonX Global Ventures, and post-programme the companies have created nearly 100 jobs and raised in excess of £10M in further funding.

“The accelerator programme was the first time that the ATI ventured into providing support and opportunities for startups. Prior to 2019, the ATI had provided funding through government grants, so the set-up of an accelerator was a big learning experience for us. We wanted to work with a delivery partner who was experienced in supporting startups, bought with them a large and varied network and were also agile enough to integrate into the existing operating model of the ATI. We were very pleased to find and start working with Gabi, Wil and Ksenia. Between them, they bought a unique set of skills — programme management, ecosystem building, targeted communications, impactful mentoring, and the ability to curate a bespoke curriculum to name a few — all of which have allowed us to run a hugely successful programme over two years.”
