Assignment #1: 5 in 5
Due date: Sept. 5
For the next 5 days, create 1 project per day. Each project must be conceptualized, produced and documented in a single day. This is the only rule of the project, and it should not be bent or broken.
- The projects may be all in the same medium, or utilize different media
- The more experimental in nature, the better
- There is no “wrong” way to do this project (other than break the one-day rule)
- You have to make 5 projects, not just sketch about how you would make them
- Document your process & results on Medium blog.
Things to consider
Design isn’t just creating an output; it’s creating the systems which create the output, and creating rulesets which generate feedback loops. It’s playing with the interactions between theme / methodology / medium / questions, and ultimately thesis.
Example
If during our paper tossing brainstorming session, I received “slowly, touch, blindly, one hour,” then I could put together a project like so:
Theme: Blindness
Methodology: Have a roommate/friend select a different group of materials from your house. Try to make sculptures with the materials only using touch and smell.
Medium: Random household objects of varying size
Questions: How does creativity based on the sense of touch, scent, and understanding of textures differ than that using our default visual functions? What is the texture of technology? How would these analog textures be represented digitally?
Prepare for presentation
- Each student should do their presentations in 4–5 minutes
- Answer these questions:
- What was/ended up being the theme?
- Which project was the most successful? Why? On what day?
- Which project was the least successful? Why? On what day?
