The following five principles are based on own research (Dr. Sebastian Müller-Bellé, 2020) investigating what is required to perceive your work as meaningful.

1. It’s all about you!
Only you can define for yourself what makes your work great and meaningful, no one else.

2. Everyone is different!
Don’t bother too much about others, everyone has a different sense of meaning of work within one’s profession.

3. Many roads to greatness!
Purpose is just one of many drivers and pathways to perceive your work as meaningful. There are many more.

The four dimensions relevant for the experience of meaningfulness in work

4. Ask for support!
The employing organization and leadership needs to support you, otherwise the perception of your work as somethig meaningful and related benefits such as motivation for work might be endangered.

5. Take your time!
Each of us should regularly reflect about what is important, there is no one size fits all and your perception will change and develop over time.

This article is based on the research published under “In Pursuit of Meaningfulness in Work”. Further articles are published at mgmtc.org on an ongoing basis.
