Mentorship at MHacks: Refactor
Hey hackers, I’m Nathan Moos, Mentorship Core Member for MHacks: Refactor. I hope everyone is as excited as I am!
At MHacks: Refactor, we’ve re-designed our mentorship program to make it easier for hackers to ask for help and easier for mentors to manage requests. We’ve also created a brand-new workshop called “Blueprinting”, which is specifically designed to make it easier for hackers to generate ideas, find teams teams, and plan out their 36 hours effectively.
As a backend engineering mentor and the Blueprinting workshop lead, I can vouch that the number-one priority we have is to help first-time hackers to deliver amazing hacks! In order to accomplish this, we have deployed the following:
mentorbot
All attendees of MHacks: Refactor will receive an invitation to join a Slack team we created for all hackers and mentors. The core team will make announcements using this Slack.
As an attendee, you simply need to send:
/mentor [brief description of problem]
to any channel and it will alert the mentors to your request. A mentor will send you a Direct Message upon acknowledgement.
Please do not send messages to public channels. This will significantly decrease the utility of the slack team for all hackers.
Blueprinting
Like I said earlier, we are proud to announce our Blueprinting workshop, which will help hackers find teams, generate ideas, and discover a plan for their hacks. It is completely okay to come to MHacks without an idea. We will help you! This workshop will take place at 18h00 on Friday, and again at 03h00 on Saturday if you missed the first one or need more help fleshing out an idea.
At blueprinting, please pitch the craziest ideas you can! Just as we want to empower you to produce the most awesome hack you can, we want you to inspire us.
Can’t wait to see you here! I’ll be around to chat, help, or mentor people at the event!
