The finish line is in sight…

Empowering stakeholders to achieve long-term behavior change in high-school students through our game design approach.

Game Concept: Terrible Workers

Guiding the next generation of designers

This sprint, we were finally reunited with South Fayette high schoolers after a month-long summer break. MHCI organized a special week-long workshop on “User-Centered Design & Innovation” to enlighten these students about the design process and various research methodologies. It was an incredible opportunity to connect with them personally, stepping outside our usual researcher roles. We joined them in their guerilla research, guiding them in understanding the research’s significance, and offered feedback on their investor pitches.

Its play-test time

During the workshop, we didn’t miss the chance to test our latest board game designs with them. Seeing them genuinely enjoy playing and engage in deep, laughter-filled conversations about interpersonal skills was immensely rewarding. They were so skilled at improv and thinking on their toes that we couldn’t help but be amazed. The experience taught us that high schoolers truly have a knack for embracing fun and spontaneous creativity! :)

Finalizing the game mechanics

We play-tested different game versions to finalize our game mechanics: one set with mixed skills against two groups of technical and interpersonal skills and a team-based approach versus individual rounds with one winner. Testing showed a clear preference for the single winner-per-round format. Surprisingly, differentiation in the sets didn’t impact the gameplay. However, having different piles prompted students to think about the differences in the cards, enhancing our learning outcomes.

What’s next for the South Fayette High School?

As we near project completion, our game rules are set, and the visual design is being finalized. Recognizing that the game is just one piece in shifting student mindsets, we’ll provide a design guide to South Fayette’s administration. It will empower them to create engaging activities and games for both in-class and out-of-class experiences. Additionally, we’ll offer five game sets for placement throughout the school, captivating high school students and preparing them with confidence for their future endeavors.

Together, these steps will make a profound difference, shaping a generation ready to embrace holistic success and thrive in the face of any challenge.
