In a time full of new terms, NFT speeds ahead and is nominated by Collins Dictionary as Word of the Year, following the boom in sales that amounted to millions in 2020.

According to the team at Collins, use of the abbreviation skyrocketed last year, rising over 11,000% in 2021. Lexicographers, who monitor the 4.5 billion word Collins Corpus to choose their word of the year, said they chose NFT for its demonstration of a “unique technicolour collision of art, technology and commerce” that has “broken through the Covid noise” and taken the spotlight.

“It’s unusual for an abbreviation to experience such a meteoric rise in usage, but the data we have from the Collins Corpus reflects the remarkable ascendancy of the NFT in 2021” said chief administrator of Collins Learning, Alex Beecroft, in an interview to The Guardian. NFTs seem to be everywhere, from the art section to financial news taking galleries and auction houses by storm in all media platforms.
