Nicholas Baker, New York based designer, talks about his entry into the world of NFTs with a collection of chair designs, done over a span of two years. What started as a creative exercise has become a series of collectables.

His first NFT, “Moby”, was designed in virtual reality and posted as a video on Baker’s social media, but the artist felt his creation deserved more. The design was part of an exercise to “stretch his creative muscles”, where he posted a chair sketch every week on Instagram. According to the artist, minting his work on the blockchain is a way of finalizing the project that provided a rich interaction with his followers.

“I think that’s an important lesson for any designer, to embrace technology and make it beautiful”, says Baker when asked what drew him into this new technology, in an interview with The Design Edit.

The VR series currently comprises three chairs: Moby, Orchid and Hug. They can be seen on the artist’s Foundation profile. Nick’s Chair Sketches series can be found on OpenSea and features the one hundred sketches made over the course of two years.
