The 15+ US Student Organizations Leading FinTech Movements at their Universities

When we started MFT at the University of Michigan, I announced the new organization on the slack channel of the Blockchain Education Network (BEN), a global, cross-campus initiative to spread blockchain culture across university campuses. More than a few students have since reached out to me telling me about the initiatives/involvement with FinTech on their own college campuses.

This led me to wonder: what other student-led FinTech initiatives are there across the country? What would happen if we were able to connect passionate students across campuses involved in this space?

For starters, we would need a way to:

  1. Easily identify groups of students leading FinTech movements on their college campuses
  2. Connect and collaborate with those students

The wonderful people at CB Insights inspired me to create a market map for “Students in FinTech”. For now, I’ve only compiled those existing/based out of the US, but hope to inspire others to create a similar resource by country.

At the bottom of this post, I’ve linked the websites/Facebook groups for the above organizations. Some groups are more active than others. I’d like to personally recognize Blockchain at Berkeley and Wharton FinTech as thought leaders in the space!

Though this was chiefly an experiment on my part, I am hoping this map fosters a) cross-campus collaboration, and b) the proliferation of FinTech communities to colleges and universities around the country. As for MFT, we have already connected with other FinTech clubs in our region as well as the Northeast and West Coast.

We are in an exciting time period right now of massive change coupled with remarkable innovation. Who better to lead change than students?

Cheers to the future.
