Micro-Chopping Statik Selektah
Statik Selektah makes music that inspires MCs to bring their A game. Just ask Black Thought, who spit a brain-melting verse over Statik’s “Bird’s Eye View” in a mere three minutes while standing inside of a closet.
From his early years honing his skills with live DJ sets and mixtapes to full-length projects with Action Bronson, KXNG Crooked, Freeway, Freddie Gibbs, Bumpy Knuckles, and Termanology, Statik’s long list of collaborators over the last decade-plus would make any producer envious.
With strong roots that date back well before the Serato era of DJing, Statik manages to mix the aesthetic of the good old days with a modern twist. In a video showcasing the making of “Bird’s Eye View” he samples from vinyl, chops the sample in Serato, and then transfers it into Pro Tools. It’s a perfect fusion of old and new.
As impressive as his methods are, the more important thing is the outcome. Statik’s discography crosses many age and geographic demographics, making for a lengthy and varied list of choice cuts. I’ve compiled 16 of my favorite Statik songs to give you damn near an hour’s worth of quality listening material. If you think I missed something, leave some feedback with a response.
