I am proud of the work I do. I am part of a team of ninety members who position ourselves at precise locations to form inspiring words — LOVE, PEACE, HOPE, and so on. The words appear so large that we are easy to spot from a distance.

We are extremely busy during the summer when the schools are closed and the kids are out. All the fairs and festivals want to book our team. We draw huge crowds with our spectacular and awe-inspiring shows. Our presence at a fair boosts ticket sales significantly.

Each of our shows lasts only sixty seconds. Within this timeframe, we create and show twenty different words. Each word appears for two seconds and then our team takes just one second to rearrange ourselves to form the next word. Yes, we move lightning-fast to achieve that kind of speed. Of course, without bumping into each other.

Most of the time, we do a perfect job. But sometimes we goof up, and things go wrong. That’s what happened at the State Fair of Texas. We were thirty seconds into the show when I felt a bit woozy. I managed for another few seconds before falling listlessly to the ground. I looked around and noticed a few of my teammates were also falling. I think we ran out of energy.

Brad had just paid for his funnel cake at the Texas fair stall when he heard his son screaming, “Dad, look up!” He came out of the stall and turned his head up to see something he had never seen before. An array of drones has made the perfect formation thirty feet above the ground to draw a word.

What he couldn’t understand was why the word read HOP.
