A short story

Madeleine looked out the window at the grey world outside. Cars drove on the street below, but she could barely see them.

Over the last years, Madeleine’s eyesight had gotten slowly worse. After years of doctor visits, they concluded it was an inherited disease. It had no cure, and Madeleine would end up blind.

Madeleine had slowly started to resent the world and everyone in it. Her friends had stopped visiting her. They had grown tired of her yelling at them and calling them insensitive.

Deep down she knew that when her friends had tried to be nice suggesting going for a walk or watching TV. She struggled with walking outside. And she was embarrassed to admit that she needed help.

It was different inside her apartment. She knew where everything was. She had to know, or she could risk never seeing something again.

At times she wondered what would happen when she went completely blind. Her parents had talked about some housing with assisted living.

She dreaded the thought. Having people helping her with everything. All she ever wanted was to be independent. She was on a waiting list for a service dog. But sometimes it could take years before to get one.
