Cara’s son’s favorite red water bottle had dropped in a niche behind the staircase. The niche was at least two feet deep and it was pitch dark inside. She supposed it led to a narrow space under the staircase, which led to the opening for the landing between the basement and the first floor.
“Forget it, Mike!” she snapped. “The bottle is lost!”
