Bloody Mercy

Farewell to plenty and peace.

In a grassy field, in the shadow of trees, a hawk stands atop a cuckoo bird that has its head up and beak open, crying for mercy. Two purple wildflowers in the foreground frame the cuckoo.

Gable focused his telescope on the lone figure climbing toward him through the narrow crack that led to the secret valley. He signaled. His scouts released the boulder.

The climber straightened on the steep slope and looked behind at the rock wedged against his escape. He shrugged and returned to scrambling upward.
