His First Covert Mission
Tales from the field
Frank was in charge, a brash young first lieutenant, barely ready for this, his first raid.
“Troops, we have our mission. We must infiltrate the compound using only our wits and our training. I won’t lie to you. It will be dangerous, and we all may not make it out alive, but this mission is of top priority. We must retrieve the goods.”
The troops grumbled, but they agreed. The lieutenant was new to leadership, but they trusted him. He was one of them.
“We must all face our fears and overcome them. There is no time for fear. Fear is the mind-killer. The prize will be ours.”
“Everybody, radio silence; the operation is a go!” Frank whispered to his fellow commandos.
The group began to creep down the stairs, making sure to remain silent.
With a hand motion, Frank spreads the team across the room. Motioning them to remain still, he gestures at Eddie and then points forward. Eddie crawls towards the goal.
Suddenly, lights flooded their position; the door opened.
“Abort the mission. Enemy forces are overwhelming,” Frank whispered as the enemy patrol appeared.
“But I wanted cookies,” wailed little Timmy as they crept back to bed.
