“This is where we found you,” said the elf, pointing at the ice cave.

Santa frowned and peered into the darkness of the cave. It was a darkness that contained the mystery of his past, echoing in the back of his mind, even when he was in the midst of the golden buzz that he felt doing his beloved work.

He had to know.

At the back of the cave was the spaceship. Red and glowing.

Santa’s touch made a red hologram project out, of a man that looked like Santa.

They said, “ You are not native to these icy shores. You are a Clausalien. Your planet has turned into coal. We sent you to the home planet of the elves, our allies. I hope you have been keeping well.”

Santa began to well up.

“You must have realised you were not from here. Your power to bend time. Transform space and fit through anything. Your predilection for milk and cookies. All inherited from our race.”

“But father why did you leave me?”

“You may have many questions,” said the hologram as if they couldn’t hear, “but I cannot give you the answers.”

The hologram faded.

Santa now knew.

I wrote this story for the above prompt, and the rules were:

  1. Tells us a story about a character finding out who they really are.
  2. Be 200 words exactly, excluding the title, subtitle, and any post-story bio / links. (We use Medium’s own word count feature.)
  3. Be fictional, even if it includes factual information or concerns.
  4. Use “Christmas” as one of your five tags. We recommend Fiction, Flash Fiction and maybe your genre too. But it’s your choice.
  5. Please, link back to the prompt so others can find it easily.
