Welcome to the second weekly challenge for May, where the theme is (Mis)representation.

As we said in the Monthly Theme announcement, the goal is to get you to focus more on the characters than would usually be the case with microfiction and flash fiction.

To be honest, I really wasn’t sure how this theme would play out, but I’ve been super-impressed by the number and quality of submissions to last week’s prompt.

Let’s keep this going!

Choice Of Characters

So, for this week, we have a selection of military roles for you to pick from. Your challenge is to choose one of them and make that person the main character in your story:

  • Commando
  • Drill Sergeant
  • Fighter Pilot
  • Submarine Captain

Challenge Requirements, Your story must:

  1. Feature one of the four roles listed above as your primary character.
  2. Be exactly 200 words long, excluding the title, subtitle, and any post-story bio/links. (We use Medium’s own word count feature.)
  3. Be fictional, even if it includes factual information or concerns.
  4. Use “Military Roles” as one of your five tags.

We look forward to seeing what you do with these.

Home for flash fiction. A place for excellent tiny stories that capture something much larger. Single momentous moments of a vast journey. A single frame of a moving picture. Microfiction between 300 & 1000 words, any genre.
