When the Universe Vanished
God and his team begin the restoral act
God looked at his leadership team assembled in the conference room. His Chief of Staff, Engineering Head, and Operations Head were waiting for him to start the emergency meeting he had called.
God cleared his throat and began, “As you all know, we lost the Universe at 11:47 pm. It all started around 10 pm when the ultra massive black hole PQN-109 started expanding rapidly and devouring everything on its path. Billions of galaxies were sucked in and they vanished in seconds. It was like a vacuum cleaner sucking in the dust. The more it consumed, the more the black hole grew and the faster it consumed. Before we could realize what was happening, it was all over. The entire Universe vanished just like that.”
God paused. No one said anything. He continued, “We are not here to do any post-mortem. That can happen later. I want to know now what we can do to restore the Universe as quickly as possible.”
The Operations Head replied, “We can try to restore it from our backups. We have never done it before, but we can try.”
“Will we get everything back?” God asked.
“We take daily backups. The last backup of the Universe was taken at 6:00 am. We’ll lose everything that happened in the Universe after 6:00 am.”
“Is there a risk in this operation?” God asked looking at his Engineering Head.
“It’s difficult to say. The Universe had so many things — galaxies, stars, planets, and life forms — there is no guarantee all those things will get restored exactly to their previous state.”
The Chief of staff broke an awkward silence, “Well, we really don’t have any other option, do we?”
“Sadly, we don’t,” said God and got up. “Initiate the restore operation at once and keep me updated.”
When Nathan, 36 years old accountant in a small town in Texas, woke up at 6:45 am, he felt something strange about the bedroom. It didn’t look right. All the stuff in the room — dresser, bookshelf, bedside lamp, photos on the wall — everything showed up without any depth.
He stepped inside the bathroom, switched on the lights, and grabbed his toothbrush. He looked at the mirror…and screamed.
He had only one eye.
