Welcome to the August 2020 edition of “My Cyber Why”! — a glimpse into the life and work of experts from around the world who have dedicated themselves to protecting cyberspace.

There’s no shortage of scary headlines about the latest hacks and malware releases. But what doesn’t make the headlines are the inspiring stories of the people who work every day to make the cyber world a safer place. These are their stories and cybersecurity is their passion.

In each episode guests answer four questions:

1. Who are you?

2. What do you do in cyber?

3. Why do you do it?

4. How can people get involved or learn more?

Today’s guest is Ann Cleaveland, the Executive Director at UC Berkeley’s Center for Long-Term Cybersecurity (CLTC). CLTC’s mission is to help individuals and organizations address tomorrow’s information security challenges to amplify the upside of the digital revolution. The CLTC looks to the future, to the evolving intersection of people and digital technologies, to inform today’s decision-makers. The CLTC Cybersecurity Futures 2025 scenarios aim to shape a forward-looking research and policy agenda that is intellectually and practically robust — and broadly applicable across countries and regions. Ann is an MBA and business analyst with business development, relationship management, and strategy experience in philanthropy and the private sector. Before joining the CLTC, Ann was the Director of Strategic Planning for the ClimateWorks Foundation where she managed the Foundation’s global strategy planning and program operations.
