Why does my SQL server behave like it has no idea what it is doing?

I strongly suspect that many of you have already asked yourselves this question.

Humans have mirror neurons with which they observe themselves all the time and thus explain themselves. So let’s put it in very simplified terms.

The SQL Server didn’t really watch itself in the past. It simply didn’t notice when it was completely wrong with a plan creation and usage. And it repeated its mistakes every damn time.

Since some SQL Server versions, Microsoft has now implemented so-called feedback features, which are supposed to make exactly this possible.

With SQL Server 2022, these features have now been extended again and even more have been added to ensure stable performance.

At the Meetup on 10/20/2022, we want to talk about these features and see how they bring improvements in the real world. We will also look at some related demos about SQL Server performance and scalability.

We will talk about:

  • Parameter sensitive plan optimization
  • Optimized plan forcing
  • Cardinality estimation feedback
  • Degree of parallelism feedback
  • Memory grant feedback
