Challenge Report
I took part in the Maven North Wind challenge in May 2023, which was around creating an executive KPI dashboard related to the infamous North Wind data set.
I use these challenges to get a bit creative and experiment, and this was no different. I wanted to create some dynamic KPI style visuals, and do introduce a little bit of the deneb / vega-lite visuals I had been learning about recently, with some bullet charts and overlapping bar charts.
Below is the resulting report. The deneb visuals were a little hit and miss, maybe too crowded here or too much going on, but I liked the KPIs.
They packed a lot of information into a small piece of real estate, giving plenty of “bang for your buck.”

I recently created a walkthrough video on how to recreate one of the KPIs, and thought I would write an accompanying article, as some people prefer to read and reference the steps, rather than follow a video.
