Rejection is hard right? Inviting your crush on a date and them saying no. Being picked last for the school sports team. Not getting any matches on Tinder… REJECTION SUCKS!

And then on top of all these rejections, Microwork comes along and rejects some of your images. THE WORLD CAN BE SO CRUEL!

We can’t help you get on a sports team nor help with your dating success, but we would like to reduce the number of rejections you get here at Microwork. So we put together this little guide.

Why does it matter?

With the Microwork app you get paid for uploading photos of everyday objects. To put it another way, we’re buying photos from you and using them to train Artificial Intelligence.

While the process of training AI is outside of the scope of this blog post (let us know if you want to learn and we’ll put an article together! 🤓), there are a few criteria that are necessary to provide high quality training data.

By following the guidelines below, you will be able to minimise your rejections and therefore MAXIMISE your earnings!

Here are the reasons you may get a rejected image in the app:

Blurry image:

Issue:

Images must be clear and well-lit. If an image is blurry, it won’t be suitable for training AI.

Resolution:

To ensure your photos are clear we recommend taking them in a place with good lighting and also from a stationary position (not in a moving vehicle or while you’re walking).

Image too close:

Issue:

This is a tricky one since the requirements for each task differ slightly. For the plant tasks, it’s important we have a close up image in order to see the leaves or fruit clearly. Yet for other tasks like the logo tasks and car tasks we’d like to see the entire object in the photo so it’s a slightly different requirement.

Resolution:

Always read the task requirements. With every task we explicitly write down our expectations for the photo, and spending an extra second to read them thoroughly will help prevent you from getting your photos rejected!

Duplicate/too similar image already submitted:

Issue:

To train AI it requires lots of different photos of objects. Repeating the same photo multiple times is no more useful than having just one image, whereas having a variation of images (different angle, background, lighting, colour etc) are a much more valuable lesson. If we detect multiple images that are very identical (or incredibly similar!) we may reject them.

Resolution:

Always take photos of different objects. If there is ever a situation where you’re taking a photo of the same object twice, make sure there are substantial differences in the photo like those listed above — angle, background, lighting etc.

Copyright infringement/Wrong medium:

Issue:

If we suspect that the work isn’t yours and that it’s taken from the internet we have the right to reject it. We pay you for the rights to every image you upload, and therefore we need to guarantee that you are the author of each image.

Resolution:

Take the images yourself. Don’t photograph from magazines, websites or paintings no matter how “good” the photo looks.

Irrelevant image:

Issue:

If we ask for a photo of a dog, and you take a photo of a cheese and tomato sandwich… we have the right to reject it. It’s not that we have anything against sandwiches, but it’s simply not the photo we’re looking for.

Resolution:

Please ensure you read the task description fully to ensure your image submissions are relevant and suitable.

Just following this short guide will help you limit the number of rejections you get, and maximise your earnings!

**TEASER we’re adding achievements to the app soon. If you start reducing your rejections now, it will help you unlock more badges once achievements are here 🤩**
