Underwater Chafing: The Perils of Deep Water Running

They’re not wearing swimming trunks. I wonder why.

About six weeks into my training for the New York City marathon, I suffered a foot injury. It’s a disappointing setback, but I’m working hard to keep a positive attitude while I let it heal. I’m also determined not to lose ground in my training. At the very least, I want to maintain fitness, if not continue to build stamina and strength, even though I can’t run.

I’m continuing to work out using a variety of low- or no-impact exercises, including gym equipment such as a stationary bike, Zero Runner, and swimming. But my main activity is deep water running (also known as pool running or aqua jogging, see here or here for some good resources). It allows me to continue to work on the specificity of running without any impact on my foot.

As with any new activity, I’ve worked my way into it. My first week of deep water running was mainly focused on form and just getting some time in the pool. But after a week or so, I’ve been pushing myself to maintain a heart rate of at least 140, based on the advice of my coach.

On dry land, a heart rate of 140 for me is a fairly easy pace, my “conversational” pace. But to reach 140 in the water? I have to work hard. After my workouts this week, my legs are pleasantly fatigued the next day, which makes me feel good, like maybe I’m actually maintaining or building strength. It makes me feel like maybe I’ll still be able to meet my marathon goals this fall.

But the thing that was most surprising about deep water running? The chafing. Yes, even under water I have to worry about chafing. Probably the problem is the liner of my swimming trunks, maybe the water makes it worse, I don’t know. But in all my reading about deep water running or aqua jogging, I never found any warnings that you should continue to think about anti-chafing strategies. Consider yourselves warned.
