Bedroom + Kitchen + Bathroom. But First, Bathroom

We’ve let our ambitions get the best of us, and have come to realize we need to focus in on our plans so we can get real things started. My mom will probably throw in a joke about how I used to start and never finish millions of projects growing up. I can’t really do that when it comes to where we are living.

We’ve got the floors ripped out and the new hardwood flooring scheduled to go in this week. Perfect. We’ve got buckets of paint, and some evening dates with the roller this week. Great. Cue the bathroom.

Our bathroom is dead. It has no character. While we’d definitely penciled it in as a project, it wasn’t something we’d planned to touch for the first year. We’d first intended to make a big dent by way of kitchen, bedrooms, patio. And then we realized it would be an easy thing to skip over once we’d lived there for a bit and settled in. There’d never be a good time to rip up our only bathroom, especially for a night-owl bathroom visitor like myself!

One thing our bathroom lacks is a ton of natural light. The way our house is situated on the hill is excellent in that it provides lots of warm, beautiful sunlight in the main living space, while the bedrooms and rest of the house stay fairly shaded and cool. Our bathroom has one small window, strategically located where the sun will only shine through it for about an hour a day.

Don’t be fooled by the counter top.

Other than that, it has seen some wear and tear from renters, including a cracked countertop and huge chunks missing from the tub that we will never comprehend, and just feels dated with builder grade brown 12"x12" tile everywhere. I don’t know what it is about vanities with rounded doors, but I absolutely despise them. For a house with so much style-potential, it’s a disgrace to see these generic, traditional cabinetry and fixtures.

How does this happen?

Our focus is to make it feel lighter, brighter, modern, and clean. That, and we want to be as smart as possible with the space without changing the footprint. Our plan is update almost everything, including sparkly new floors and tile, a unique vanity (perhaps converted from a dresser), more lighting and storage, all new fixtures, tub, and toilet.

We own the place. We deserve to use a toilet that no one else’s butt has touched.

We’ve been down internet and Pinterest rabbit holes trying to find the perfect vanity, and weeded through the absurd number of sink faucet styles that exist in the world. We’re close to confirming our design plan. Stay tuned!
