It’s a misconception that our world is more dangerous than in the past. In fact, due greatly to American leadership — under Republican and Democratic presidents — we live in the safest and most prosperous time in human history.

That doesn’t make the events yesterday in Paris hurt less, or make the photos and video any less disturbing. If anything, events like this are so arresting because of their stark contrast to our daily lives here in America. Yesterday we glimpsed the barbarity that is ever-knocking on the door of civilization.

For the last 11 months here in Iowa we’ve been engaged in our loud and messy democracy, drawing contrasts, and yes, throwing sharp elbows too. But last night and this morning the stakes of our decisions — first in February and then in November — became clear. Providing for the common defense is the government’s first charge, and I hope the Democrats debating tonight will be prepared to answer how they will reassert American leadership globally and keep Americans safe at home and abroad. Iowans, and indeed the nation, will be watching.
