Proud to be a Democrat After Last Night’s Debate
Now that’s what I call a debate!
No name-calling. No back-and-forth insults. No doubling down on the failed policies of the past. No hateful rhetoric. No Trump.
Instead, the first Democratic debate last night featured five middle class champions who offered up impassioned, substantive and thoughtful visions for our nation and our working families.
I started off my night at the Urbandale Democrats’ watch party with our new Vice Chair Danny Homan, State Rep. John Forbes, and about 60 enthusiastic Democrats who were literally lined up outside the room to catch the first debate.
The energy in the room was palpable, but it wasn’t just confined to Urbandale. I loved seeing Democrats across the state fired up for our first debate!
What we all saw was a group of Democratic candidates who succinctly laid out what’s at stake in this next election. They reminded Americans of the massive Republican failures from the party’s last time in the White House, but more importantly, offered up their plans and solutions on how we can continue to move our country forward.
In fact, we saw more talk about policies that would help Iowa’s middle class families than the two previous GOP debates (both JV and varsity) COMBINED. It’s amazing what you can cover when your candidates are focused on the issues confronting the American people instead of throwing immature, snarky barbs at one another.
We heard the Democrats talk in depth on everything from combatting income inequality, building an economy that works for all, paid family leave policies, thoughtful foreign policy approaches, passing comprehensive immigration reform, and combatting the serious threats of climate change.
To sum it all up, this debate left me incredibly proud to be a Democrat, and to be fighting for the values Democrats across Iowa and the country share.
I can’t wait for Iowa to host the next debate at Drake University on November 14th!
