I’ve been reading on Medium for 48 months. I’ve found pieces here that have been therapists, mentors, coaches, and guiding lights to me.

Today, I want to highlight six fascinating things I have learned from articles on this platform. This is in response to Debbie Walker’s prompt asking us what Medium has done for us.

1. The Dunning Krueger graph

The Dunning Krueger graph talks about how someone can feel confident as soon as they learn how to do something. The rush of a new skill — like cooking, driving, or filling a tooth as a dental student — can show as peaking confidence that has little knowledge to back it up.

People on the peak of Mount Stupid do not know what they don’t know and are disproportionately confident in their level of knowledge.

As people learn more and their knowledge increases, paradoxically, their confidence plummets. They fear doing anything.

The graph explained the arrogance of the newbie, the hesitancy of the person who knows…
