A Love Letter To Self

Love is an active verb. It is born within us, and when cultivated its nature is to expand and grow. In loving yourself, you have more to give others, not less.

Dear Juneta,

I’m writing because you seem a bit intimidated, overwhelmed, embarrassed, and unsure about writing a love letter to yourself. I just want to remind you that love lives inside you.

You grew up surrounded by love. You lost a lot early in life. Watching your mother in her beauty shop, you learned spontaneous ease of laughter. You learned that compassion, kindness, and forgiveness when combined breeds love.

Your mother often picked up older ladies that were shut-ins, living in assisted living, and some at rest homes to do their hair. She would bring them back to her shop whenever they were able and asked her, using her time and her gas.

She had other customers with appointments, but she worked them in. She sometimes worked past nine at night, despite starting her day at seven a. m.

Your daddy worked just as hard, but he was never too busy to help someone else out. He was generous with his time and his many skills.
