What’s your favorite taste bud tickle? Sweet? Salty? Or some combination of the two?

Recently, they — whoever they is, are? — started putting salt crystals on many things chocolate, and it seems to have caught on. For example, you have your candy bar with a gooey caramel filling, dusted with grains of sea salt on top. Or the same combo in a gourmet ice-cream flavor with a name like salted caramel chocolate. People like ‘em.

But not all sweet and salty combinations are created equal. And that’s why I am before you today with this sad story of a concoction that was so destined rfor culinary success but fell flat on its haute cuisine face. So get out your hankies and set a spell while this woeful tale I tell…

This gastronomic tragedy took place at the Blackberry Bistro in Columbus, Ohio’s chi-chi German Village district. Well, okay, it’s on the outskirts of the district, but it continues the cobblestone red brick motif so it might as well be. Or was it in the trendy — in a vegan-youth culture-boutiquey way — Short North? I forget.

The last time we dined there, the mostly organic, locally grown menu, had a new item — bacon bourbon creme brûlée.
