Desperately Eating A Ketchup Packet In The Ophthalmologist’s Office
My body was showing its age
Sometimes I forget I am an older woman with an older woman’s body.
For the second time in four weeks, I am looking rather crazy in the ophthalmologist’s office. I had my left cornea replaced for the second time in March 2025. I have keratoconus, which ruined both of my corneas.
The right cornea was replaced twice, first in 2018, and then the left cornea in 2019. Cataract operations on the left in early 2020 and on the right in late 2021 completed the set.
The doctor who performed the latest surgery used a new technique to help my left eye heal faster since I am older. I didn't know there were daily doctor visits for four days after the operation. Since the doctor’s office is 49 minutes each way, my poor husband had to drag the barely awake me back and forth.
The operation was on a Tuesday. On Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, and the following Monday, my spouse packed me up and took me back and forth.
Why?
Because part of the recovery is lying flat on your back for three days, only getting up to pee, eat, and see the doctor. For older patients, we got prism glasses so we could watch…
