Do We Need the Sex Talk, Again?
What middle-aged women are never warned about is the impact of menopause on their sex lives.
One of the most important, and somewhat embarrassing, phases in a young person's life is when their parents try to have “the talk” with them. By “the talk”, I mean the sex talk.
Personally, I’ve never had this experience with my parents, but after watching movies where sex talk scenes are played out, I can see why. In the 2007 movie Sydney White, starring Amanda Bynes, the young protagonist is seen in her bedroom sitting on her bed while her father uses plumbing equipment to explain what her body goes through during her period. While the father seemed wildly uncomfortable and was doing his best as the mother was not in the picture, I had to give the guy credit.
It’s an awkward conversation for a parent and child, especially for girls. It’s a sign that their body is changing; a recognition that they’re crossing from girlhood to womanhood. While this talk is essential and a rite of passage, it turns out that this is the only time in women's lives when someone sits down to warn them about what to expect.
