So many wonderful people lit my path when I stumbled. But 20 years of working with Margaree built a trust that can never be broken.

My coworker, Margaree, taught me how to respect myself.

Her ongoing support prevented me from quitting my job whenever a colleague criticized me — which was often. At the workplace that has given me security and developed my ability to listen to the heart of a person’s story.

I inherited the gift of the gab from my parents. This odd ability has allowed me to persuade people to do phone interviews. Margaree started a few months after I did, but she soon became my mentor. I defended her when she got hassled for going to too many family funerals. A decade later, they finally changed their family leave policy.

I’ve always been brave and outspoken.

Foolishly so, because I had no sense of self-preservation.

The quality must be in my DNA. My family’s ability to encounter trouble and walk away unscathed did not prepare me for real life. As a result, I didn’t have the stamina to understand adversity or persistence.
